| Thank you to everyone who contributed to the debate that took place on Friday 27 March 2009 in Elluminate, and to everyone who has contributed to the wiki so far. I will be putting up the transcripts asap, but in the meantime some clear action points came out of the discussion: 1. Definitions We've had a great discussion around definitions, much of which is already documented on site and is well worth a read. However, the short version of the groups debate boils down to:
2. Components This definition will support and reflect the component parts of what we understand as being meant by digital literacy. This work has already been started on site. ACTION: Using the wiki, we will define the major areas that a digital literacy agenda should address. In addition to this broad framework, it is important that we begin to map the work which is being done to address elements in greater depth/complexity. ACTION: Once the major areas and sectors are defined, we will map resources to these. 3. Sectors & Organisation It is critical to identify the sectors and organisations who have a stake in delivering and shaping the UK's digital literacy agenda, in order to move forward at national level. Some of this work has already been started. ACTION: Contribute to the Sectors and Organisations pages in the wiki. These will be the organisations that we will lobby for engagement, either involving in the development process or once the definition and components have been determined. It would also be good to lobby identified partners to support a small conference to follow up from the current actions and set new ones, in June or July. If you are reading this and think your organisation would be the perfect one to support an event, please get in touch. If a face to face event is not possible then we will host the next event in Elluminate again, & hope for better luck with the gods of technology at the next attempt :) Huge thanks to everyone who is involved so far, if you haven't already please do sign up & join in! | |

Literacy is the coding and de-coding of thoughts through symbols. There is a digital method of reading and writing. We need to learn it the same way we learned alpha reading and writing.

I wrote something on eFoundations a while back (August last year) on the lack of consistency in the way terminology is used in this area (digital literacy vs. media literacy vs. information literacy) and got quite a lot of comments. I have a piece in the journal Literacy called 'Writing the future in the digital age' (2007 41:3) which does some definition work. My position has changed a bit since then but I'd be happy to share it. I have the PDF but can't see how I can upload it.
